Adobe aims to move into downtown San Jose office tower in early 2023

SAN JOSE — Adobe plans to move into its new downtown San Jose office tower in early 2023, an expansion that’s a welcome counterpoint to the dismal economic illnesses unleashed by the coronavirus.

The tech titan expects to nearly double its workforce in downtown San Jose when it moves into the company’s under-construction office tower on West San Fernando Street.

“Adobe is an organization that has always believed that people are our greatest asset,” said Gloria Chen, chief human resources officer at Adobe. “Innovation and creativity are at the heart of our DNA.”

The new 18-story tower totals 700,000 square feet and will be connected to Adobe’s existing three-building campus by a bridge that will arch over San Fernando Street.

“It will be Silicon Valley’s first all-electric building,” Chen said in a recent interview with this news agency to provide an update on downtown San Jose’s expansion plans.

The expansion into the skyscraper, which Adobe calls the North Tower, will give the company a four-building headquarters campus in downtown San Jose.

“We know the nature of work has changed forever,” Chen said. “We believe hybrid working with flexibility at the center of it is the way we move forward.”

But what’s not part of the equation is the notion that all employees are working from home or in a remote environment.

“Coming together in person for work that matters is absolutely essential,” Chen said.

San Jose-based Adobe is planning a significant increase in its workforce in downtown San Jose when the North Tower opens at 333 W. San Fernando St.

Currently, Adobe employs approximately 3,800 people in downtown San Jose. The new skyscraper will accommodate about 3,000 people, according to Adobe. The North Tower expansion will increase the downtown workforce to 6,800 people, representing an approximately 79% increase in the number of employees in San Jose’s urban core.

“Adobe’s North Tower project and increased workforce demonstrates Adobe’s dedication and confidence in the continued success of downtown San Jose,” said Bob Staedler, CEO of Silicon Valley Synergy. , a land-use planning consultancy firm.

The tech company believes employees can’t always maximize their creativity and innovative prowess when working only through Zoom calls or video conferences.

“What you’re really looking for is the opportunity for casual collision, in-person innovation, relationship building, bonding between different teams and different organizations,” Chen said.

Videoconferences are often conducted in a regimented fashion, which could stifle creativity.

“When you work in a remote box, you don’t get the energy from interactions with others,” Chen said. “When people come back to the office for the first time, they realize how much they missed. Like many other companies, we are moving to a hybrid model.

The future Adobe Bridge will connect the new tower to the existing corporate campus, which could further increase collaboration within the headquarters complex and promote safe travels on San Fernando Street.

The company also plans to add artwork related to the new bridge.

“We will have art installations on the bridge and paintings at street level below the bridge,” Chen said. “We will have lots of moments and opportunities for people at street level to appreciate the artwork. We are proud to engage with local artists to bring this to life.

Construction could be completed in 2023 on the new bridge, although that project has yet to begin.

The new tower is also expected to be a top building in terms of green and eco-friendly features.

“Adobe’s strategy is to help build a sustainable future,” Chen said. “The North Tower is built to LEED Gold specifications and will help us reduce our greenhouse gas emissions. The building is fully electric and will run on 100% renewable energy. About 80% of construction waste was diverted from landfills to other construction.
